What to Look for in a Pair of Safety Goggles to Use on the Job

Working in construction or an industrial shop with tasks that have extreme demands, safety goggles are most likely something that you wear every single day and you wouldn’t be able to do your job without them. If this is the case, you’ve probably encountered your fair share of safety goggles that just didn’t make the cut; maybe they were uncomfortable, maybe they didn’t provide the protection you needed, or maybe they were just low-quality.

Finding safety goggles that match your specific needs can be a frustrating process – not to mention pricey. Before you buy your next pair, give this post a read and find out a few things that you should be looking for in your next pair of safety goggles.

Safety Note: No matter which frame style, material or lens you choose, make sure the goggles have been certified to meet ANSI Z87.1-2010 Standards for use in industrial applications. These goggles will provide the highest level of safety eye protection.

Safety Goggles that are Actually Comfortable.

If you spend extended periods of time wearing your safety goggles, you know that comfort is key. One of the main things that impacts comfort is the type of foam used in the goggles.

There are a number of different foams used for safety goggles. NBR Foam provides an excellent seal to the face. Soft Airy Foam Provides a good fit around the face and more cushion. EVA Foam provides a comfortable breathable experience. Each foam has different feel and function for your comfort and protection.

Safety Goggles with the Right Type of Frame

There are many frame styles to choose from for safety goggles. Some are designed to fit over prescription glasses and others are sleek tight fitting with a low profile on the face. It’s important to find safety goggles that have frames that will meet your needs.

You might also want to take some time to investigate the frame material and flexibility. Do you need safety goggles that are durable and have more rigid frames? Or do you need safety goggles with frames that have a little flexibility to them?

Another important feature of a safety goggle frame is proper ventilation. Goggles that are well ventilated allow moisture to escape and help prevent fogging.

Safety Goggles with the Best Lenses for Your Needs

There are 2 main things to keep in mind when you are choosing lenses, visibility and durability.

Visibility

Lenses come in a variety of colors and tints. When choosing a lens color, think about where you will be wearing the glasses. Are you going to be wearing them in a very bright outdoor area?  Then you might want a smoke lens. Inside an industrial shop where the light is dimmer than the outdoors. Consider a clear or yellow tint lens. Also, there are safety goggles that have an anti-fog coating on the lenses to help keep your vision clear in varying conditions.

Durability

Another feature to consider is if the safety goggle meets and exceeds ballistic standards. Safety goggles that meet this standard are about as tough as they get.
